It helps you access restricted websites in places with censored Internet. In a nutshell, instead of connecting directly to the blocked website, Tor connects you to a relay, which connects to a relay, which connects to a relay, and so forth, until it reaches an exit node somewhere where the access isn’t restricted. From the point of view of the Internet filter, you’re connecting to the relay, not the website, and from the point of view of the website, the traffic is coming from the exit node.
